Starigrad

Starigrad

Beneath the Velebit Mountain and the Paklenica National Park, directly along the coast, about 45 km northeast of Zadar is the place of Starigrad, the center of the Paklenica Riviera. The municipality of the same name, in addition to Starigrad-Paklenica, also has the settlements Seline and Tribanj, which is also the last settlement in the Zadar County at the very end of northern Dalmatia.

The choice of beaches is exceptional, they are beautiful, the sea is crystal clear, and the offer of accommodation and facilities is excellent. The landscapes are stunning and the sunset fabulous.

Due to the beauty of this area and the world-famous National Park with canyons of Velika and Mala Paklenica, this place is very active and there are numerous events throughout the year, especially in summer. Climbers’ meetings, mountain races, local fairs, various festivals are held regularly, and many outdoor concerts are held in the summer. For many, this landscape will be known as the scenery of legendary adventure films by the Indian chief Winnetou, based on the novels of Karl May.

Starigrad is located in a protected natural environment since Velebit and its coast was declared a nature park in 1981.

According to the latest census, the municipality has 1,876 inhabitants, Starigrad Paklenica has 1,140, Seline has 469 and Tribanj has 267.

Starigrad has been inhabited since ancient times, so it is an exceptional historical heritage that we find here. Some of the sights are the Večka Tower, a medieval fort located along the coast, which according to some legends was a royal court, the medieval Paklarić fort located on the site of a former fortress on the east side of the entrance to Velika Paklenica Canyon, the medieval Church of St. Peter, Mirila, or funeral monuments along the Velebit trails dating from the 17th to the 20th centuries and the Marasovići Ethno House in the old village of Marasovići before the entrance to the National Park.

In terms of economy, the population here was previously engaged in animal husbandry, which is nowadays less represented, and service and tourism activities are beginning to emerge. This is where rural and adventure tourism and sports tourism are popular. The unspoiled nature and clean environment allow the development of agricultural branches such as olive growing, fruit growing, vegetable growing, livestock, beekeeping, fishing and mariculture.

This area is in parallel influenced by the sub-Mediterranean and mountain climate resulting in diverse vegetation.

The combination of the massive Velebit Mountain, the indented coastline and the crystal clear sea of the Velebit Channel Starigrad-Paklenica and its surroundings make it a uniquely spectacular location.
