The island of Vir is one of the most famous tourist destinations in Croatia. It is located in the northwest of the Zadar County. It is surrounded by the Vir Sea, the Povljana Canal and numerous smaller bays. It is connected to the mainland by a bridge. Vir is characterized by a true Mediterranean climate, with an average number of hours of sunshine per year of about 2450, which is almost 300 sunny days. Due to the ideal climatic conditions, Vir has greatly expanded its tourist offer over the years, so that the growing number of tourists is no surprise. In addition, private accommodation providers are increasing year by year.

Throughout history, Vir people have been involved in fishing, livestock and agriculture. Between the two world wars they started to go to sea. The key moment for the island of Vir was definitely the construction of the bridge in the 70s. After putting the bridge into service, Vir experienced a major turning point and everything became more alive. The bridge is therefore symbolically called the “Bridge of Life”.

The island of Vir is today one of the most sought-after holiday destinations. It is decorated with beautiful beaches; from sandy to rocky, from overcrowded landscaped beaches with diverse amenities to intimate bays as part of unspoiled nature.

Almost every beach has a café, a restaurant and a beach bar. Several typical Dalmatian restaurants – Konobas with local specialties make the gastronomic offer of Vir even more attractive. For the younger generations there are discos, night clubs and every week during the summer season concerts and many other events in the center of Vir. From year to year, the number of tourists in Vir increases, which extends the offer.

One of the most interesting attractions of Vir is the Vir Lighthouse, where tradition and luxury merge. The lighthouse, today’s Villa Lanterna, was built during the Austro-Hungarian Empire and is now a monument and the first renovated and luxuriously designed lighthouse on the Adriatic. It is considered a national cultural and historical heritage, which serves the promotion of local and Croatian tourism.

On the island of Vir you will find all the amenities you need for everyday life. Vir has kindergarten, school, numerous children’s parks and playgrounds, ambulance, dental office, pharmacy, several large shops, market, small shops, cafes, restaurants. Vir also has its own bus station, which perfectly connects the island with the city and surroundings.

Vir is only 12 km from the nearest town Nin and 26 km from Zadar.
