National Park Northern Velebit

National Park Northern Velebit is the youngest national park in Croatia, and its purpose is to preserve the original natural values. It is inscribed on the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in Europe as part of the common world heritage of 13 countries under the name “Beech rainforests and native beech forests of the Carpathians and other parts of Europe”.
The park abounds in different habitats that are home to numerous plant and animal species.

Within the Northern Velebit there are several protected areas: the strict reserve Hajdučki and Rožanski kukovi, the botanical reserves Visibaba and Zavižan-Balinovac-Velika kosa and the Velebit Botanical Garden, which has been declared as a monument of park architecture. Northern Velebit is adorned with original beech forests, karst limestone relief and sedimentary rocks.

Here is Lukina jama, one of the deepest caves in the world as well as Cerovačke pećine, one of the most valuable speleological objects in Croatia, which has remarkable scientific and tourist value.

The entire park is traversed with many hiking trails which helps you to get better know the priceless beauty of nature. Educational boards placed along the trails will introduce you to the natural and cultural values of this area. Also, from the tops of the mountains you can enjoy a beautiful view of the sea and islands.
National Park Northern Velebit is an ideal destination for all lovers of recreation and active holidays in untouched nature and real wilderness.
