Nature Park Vrana Lake

Vrana Lake is the largest natural lake in Croatia, covering 57 km2. Together with the surrounding area, it is a Nature Park and one of the largest wetlands in Croatia. Nature Park Vrana Lake is a karst field filled with water. This natural phenomenon is home for many plants and animals and has an ornithological reserve that is considered one of the most important parts of the park because of the highest concentration of birds in this area. There is an untouched natural habitat here where more than 100 species of birds nest, including some endangered species, and about 100,000 waterbirds overwinters here. Apart from birds, Vrana Lake is full of sea and freshwater fish. The park is also home to several species of frogs, reptiles, mammals, and a lot of insects.

In addition to the rich flora and fauna, the park also has numerous remains of cultural heritage. The late-antique tower Osridak is one of the oldest historical structures that served as an observation post and shelter for the army of Turkish attacks, as well as the fort Kličevica. The former Turkish building of Maškovića han and numerous of other remains is also indispensable and give Vrana Lake and its surroundings a special historical significance. Nature Park Vrana Lake is visited by an increasing number of tourists every year and is a favorite gathering place for fishermen who can fish here all year round. Cyclists can enjoy in a 50-kilometer-long trail, and if you like to walking you will be greatly helped by educational boards on the trails.

From the lookout located on the top of “Kamenjak” there is a unique view of the whole lake, the sea and the beautiful Kornati archipelago.
