Seline

Seline is a small tourist village in the northern part of Dalmatia, within the Zadar County. This place found its ideal position between beautiful pebble beaches surrounded by clear sea and the Mala Paklenica canyon at the very foot of Velebit, the longest mountain in Croatia. Seline together with the places Starigrad and Tribanj form the municipality of Starigrad. The place is located a little less than 40 kilometers northwest of the large tourist town of Zadar and less than 10 kilometers from the nearest toll booth for the highway.

The village of Seline is located at the very entrance to the famous Paklenica National Park, i.e. near the Mala Paklenica canyon which offers a view of the beautiful karst landscape and untouched nature. While in the southern part of this place, kilometers of rugged coastline offer beautiful pebble beaches along the Adriatic Sea, of which it is important to highlight the Pisak beach which in its shape resembles on one of the most famous beaches in Croatia – Zlatni Rat in island of Brač.

These great natural beauties in a peaceful environment are an increasing attraction for locals and tourists, because of what Seline became like an oasis of peace by the sea with unimaginable untouched nature along the Velebit. This is precisely why the number of tourists as well as accommodation units is increasing year by year.

Thanks to nature, the former population of this area existed on agriculture and cattle breeding, living in villages on Velebit mountain with many pastures, while today the situation is completely different. As in most Dalmatian villages, after the Adriatic road was built the inhabitants moved to the southern part of village which is located by the sea and started to engage in tourism, which soon took off in a big way. This fact is supported by the number of accommodation units and accompanying content essential for everyday life, which is why Seline received the important title of ‘Champion of Mini-Tourism’ in the eighties of the last century.

In Seline, there are several restaurants with a wide gastronomic offer that give you the opportunity to enjoy the specialties of Mediterranean cuisine, and the locals recommend the mussels from the famous Seline shellfish hatchery. In addition to restaurants, this place also offers all the necessary facilities for everyday life and enjoyment, such as cafes, several markets, a tourist office, a clinic, several tourist camps, the Church of the Birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the like. However, Seline also offer many places for fun and exploring, so it’s definitely not a bad idea to explore the canyon of Mala Paklenica, rent quads for driving in the area under Velebit mountain, visit the medieval Večka tower from the time of defense against the Turkish invasion, and the medieval fortress Paklarić together with the viewpoint of the same name.

For lovers of fun and active vacations and adrenaline, the Paklenica Riviera offers about 150 kilometers of walking and hiking trails along the cliffs of the Velika Paklenica canyon, as well as cycling trails in an idyllic natural environment, while rapids on the upper course of the Zrmanja River are a reason to have a good time in rafting, kayaking and canoeing. Nearby there are three caves that reveal the underground world of Velebit: Manita peć, Modrić špilja and Cerovačke pećine. It is also essential to visit the Vaganac Adrenaline Park, which offers adrenaline climbing on the Velebit rocks, as well as the Velebit Nature Park and the Northern Velebit National Park. And for lovers of sea sports, here are good conditions provided for sailing, rowing and diving through the interesting undersea of the Podvelebit channel. According to the last available census from 2021, village Seline has 414 inhabitants on a total area of 50.3 square kilometers. Until the territorial reorganization of municipalities in Croatia, the village of Seline was an integral part of the old municipality of Zadar.
